Because of the Coronavirus/Covid-19 pandemic, we are all living through some trying times. Please be assured that we at Grace Montessori School take the safety and health of our students, including your child, and our staff very seriously. Because of this, we have implemented protocols and practices in accordance with guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control, the public health officials State of Virginia, the Fauquier County Health Department and the Virginia Department of Social Services. As you probably are aware, this guidance has changed from time-to-time over the first few months of 2020, and it is reasonable to anticipate that further changes in such guidance will be issued as our public health officials learn more about this disease and the mechanisms by which it is transmitted. We are fully committed to monitoring announcements about any such changes daily, and to modifying our protocols and practices on a timely basis to ensure that they remain in conformance with the most current guidance our public health officials provide.
For our part, we will implement the following measures to reduce the risk of Covid-19 infection for all our students and our staff until our public health officials recommend changes or give us reason to believe that it is safe to discontinue them. This is a summary of the policies and procedures. A complete copy of the GMS COVID Health and Safety Policy and Procedures is available here.
● Limit group size to 12 for children under the age of 4 (including staff) ten (10 ) students and two (2) adults
● Requiring all children and staff to provide documentation of age-appropriate immunizations.*
● All programs offered will be based upon 5 = days (no 2 or 3 days options)
● Curbside drops off and picks up of children in order to limit access to the building.
● Children will be required to bring their own water bottle, snack, and lunch each day.
● Children will be required to wash their hands upon entering the classroom and as appropriate throughout the day.
● Temperature check and health screening of all staff and students daily upon arrival. Persons with a fever of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or above or other signs of illness will not be admitted to the school.
● Require staff and students who have tested positive or are showing signs of COVID and/or have had recent contact with someone who had tested positive for COVID to stay home.
● Incorporating instructions on practices recommended to reduce the likelihood of Covid-19 infections into our classroom curricula. This will include instruction on frequent hand washing, the proper method for effective hand washing, avoiding touching one’s face, and covering one’s mouth and nose if one must sneeze or cough.
● All staff will be required to wear a face mask so equivalent facial coverings throughout the school day. Considering the ages of our students, they will not be required to wear masks/suitable facial coverings, but families may request that their child wear a face mask or shield.
● Increased time outdoors. In the Montessori philosophy, the outdoor environment is an extension of the indoor classroom. We are fortunate to have a newly expanded playground, courtyard, and the beautiful town of The Plains with lots of educational opportunities waiting to be explored.
● Classrooms and other areas to which students have access when at Grace will be carefully sanitized every evening and before students arrive to begin their school day in the morning. Any area observed to have come into contact with bodily fluids during the school day will be cordoned off and sanitized immediately.
● All materials in the classroom will be used on a one-time basis. When a child finishes using a material, it will be removed from the shelf and sanitized before returning to the shelf for another child to use.
● To the greatest extent possible, social distancing (minimum of 6 feet of separation) will be practiced throughout the school day.
● In the event we have any reason to believe that any of our students, despite our best efforts, has been exposed to Covid-19, we will promptly notify the parents of the affected students of the suspected exposure.
Vaccination Requirement Policy*
Grace Montessori School firmly believes that receiving all recommended vaccines may be the single most important health-promoting intervention that prevents serious illness and saves lives. All Grace Montessori School students and staff are required to provide documentary proof of adequate age-appropriate immunization with the prescribed number of doses of vaccine. Vaccines must be administered in accordance with the harmonized or the harmonized catch-up schedule of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Academy of Family Physicians and must be administered within the spacing and age requirements. Grace Montessori School will no longer accept students or staff who cannot provide documentation of up to date immunizations.
The learning curve on Covid-19 since it reached the United States has been very steep, but there is still much about the disease that even our most highly qualified infectious disease physicians and researchers do not know. Despite all we are doing to prevent any exposure of our students and staff, we of course cannot guarantee that your child will not be exposed, whether at Grace Montessori School or elsewhere, or if exposed, that your child will not contract the disease.
